3924128300001ZIn their anthology “Black Berlin,” Oumar Diallo and Joachim Zeller focus on the people of African descent who have lived in Berlin for many generations and helped shape the metropolis on the Spree River.

The various phases of African migration to Berlin over the last three centuries are illuminated. Diallo traces the lives of Africans, Black Germans, People of Color and African-Americans and tells of their struggle for emancipation and social equality. In addition to issues of “integration policy,” racism on the part of the white majority society is also brought up. The anthology concludes by presenting important contemporary initiatives of diaspora communities and their activities in contemporary Berlin.
