Crystal Swain Bates wrote the children’s book “Naturally Me” to help build children’s confidence and self-esteem.
The protagonists of the book are a Black girl with freckles and a Black boy with a gap in his teeth. Throughout the book, from a first-person narrative perspective, the two refer positively to their identities and appearances.
“Naturally Me” is primarily aimed at African-American children, but at the same time its message is an encouraging and universal one that should ultimately apply to all children and adults as well.
