As part of the IMAFREDU project, a collective of experts from practice and research has been working on transforming the criticism of existing teaching materials into constructive suggestions. This “Racism Critical Guide for Reflecting on Existing and Creating New Teaching and Learning Content on Blackness, Africa, and the African Diaspora” is the preliminary result. The guide can be referred to for instructional design and materials creation as well as textbook production and curriculum development in breaking down prevailing colonial racist representations. Elina Marmer’s research project IMAge of AFRica in EDUcation explores the connection between racism in textbooks and racial discrimination in the classroom. In addition to articles and material recommendations, the website also contains a racism-critical guide by a collective of authors. “Textbooks are increasingly coming under criticism for reproducing colonial racist representations of Africa and people of African descent.
