The campaign was initiated in 2016 at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London by students and faculty.
On their website, the activists write about their work:
“Decolonising Our Minds seeks to challenge the political, intellectual and structural legacies of colonialism and racism both within and outside the university, by promoting an awareness of global intellectual traditions, tackling structural inequalities within the institution, and engaging with ethnic minority and working-class communities around London and the UK.”
At the beginning of the campaign, attention was drawn to the media’s misrepresentation that the debate was merely about removing white European theorists from reading lists and seminar curricula. This article (The Guardian) bundles corrections, statements of the activists and further information, for example on the history of SOAS as a former colonial institution.
Presentations of the network can be listened to here, current information on the work of the campaign can be found here.
