The Canadian David. H.T. Wong tells the story of the first Chinese immigrants to the USA in this graphic novel, using the Wong family as an example. A story that is marked by resistance to a racist policy of discrimination over the entire narrative period of five generations.

The publisher’s site says in a review about the book:

“Chinese migration began during the Opium Wars of the mid-19th century and the famines that followed. Full of anticipation and hope, the travelers had christened their arrival point in California ‘Gam Saan’, golden mountain. In the U.S. as in Canada, however, they soon found themselves at the bottom of the immigrant hierarchy.”
