dummyThe book “Girl or Boy” is one of the few books for children that critically examines gender roles and the construction of gender. The easy-to-understand texts are thought-provoking and challenge the pervasive expectations that girls prefer to play with Barbies and boys want to play soccer. (Cf. book description).

The nonfiction picture book, which also depicts Figures of Color, is recommended for children ages three to six. It also contains an explanatory epilogue for reference persons reading aloud, which also refers to selected theory texts.

The book is highly recommended thematically. It must be critically noted, however, that transidentity is not addressed, although it would have been necessary in this context. (See also i-PÄD, Intersectional Children’s Book List). Unfortunately, the formation of gender roles is explicitly presented and negotiated as lacking context.
