5222249700001ZThe anthology Sisters and Souls, edited by Natasha Kelly, is dedicated to the Afro-German poet and author May Ayim, her legacy, and her influence on successor generations of Black women.

In the book, published to mark the 20th anniversary of May Ayim’s death, Black women of different generations powerfully describe how they have been personally and politically inspired by the author and activist.

In the 1980s, at about the same time as the “women’s movement” in Germany, the “black movement” emerged, in which May Ayim played an important role. The diverse contributions of the authors of “Sisters and Souls” speak of the continuity of Black history that began well before the 1980s. The perspectives of Afro-German women shed light on the so-called second wave of the Black movement. They provide insights into the realities of Black people’s lives today and look ahead to the future of the 21st century.
