Racism and its accompanying forms of discrimination are widespread and manifest themselves through individual exclusions, structural barriers, legal discrimination, and political defenses. We find them in young people as well as in old people, in the university professor as well as in the young person looking for an apprenticeship. The project “Anti-racism work for young people with elements of social justice training”, the results of which are now available in this reader, represents a contribution to counteracting prejudice, racism and ethnocentrism on an educational level.

This volume shows why a diversity-conscious perspective is fundamentally important in international youth work and how it can be implemented and applied in practice. The move away from a ‘cultural lens’ (as is often prevalent in international work) to a diversity-conscious perspective is vividly explained. The study ends with reflections and suggestions for educational practice. Elli Eisele / Wiebke Scharathow / Anne Sophie Winkelmann 2008: Duplications. Diversity-conscious perspectives on the theory and practice of international youth work. Jena: Glaux Publishing House

“Criticism of racism in the sense of a critical pedagogical practice means the constant theory-based reflection of structures, discourses and relations of dominance as well as the elaboration of correspondingly resistant and changing strategies and alternatives for action. The contributions in these two ambitious anthologies shed light on possibilities and limits. The contributions […] illuminate the possibilities and limits in this regard with regard to, among other things, a pedagogy critical of racism with children, young people and adults.” (excerpt from the blurb) Wiebke Scharathow / Rudolf Leiprecht (eds.) 2009: Rassismuskritik. “The non-fiction book ‘Rassismus auf gut Deutsch’ (Racism in Good German), which was published in 2010 and compiled texts by various black and white authors, offers a current look at the topic of racism in Germany. The book focuses on the descriptions and analyses of terms that have racist connotations and which are explained in this meaning. The editors rightly call this a reference work, and as such it is suitable for an audience interested in comprehensible explanations of racist linguistic traditions in the German context. Even the introductory text by the two authors-a Black German and a White German-offers…

The first part of the reference work first explains the connection between racism and colonialism, while the second part specifically examines terms and words for their transmission of white knowledge. Part three is dedicated to the topic of language and resistance and shows possibilities of intervention and re-description by the previously “described” themselves. The book is suitable as a lexicon and argumentation aid in the debate about language and power for journalists, academics and educators. “To claim that one does not need to reflect on one’s use of language is ignorant at best, given the implications and connotations pointed out.…

“The editors – Gabi Elverich, scholarship holder of the Heinrich Böll Foundation and doctoral student at the University of Göttingen (b. 1972), Annita Kalpaka, educationalist at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences, Department of Social Work (1955) and Karin Reindlmeier, lecturer in political youth and adult education (1973) – focus in their reflection on the presentation of attempts to implement the manifold theoretical findings and concepts from racism research in school and especially extracurricular educational work. In doing so, they assume in their basic understanding that racism represents a social structural principle.” (Excerpt from the Review by Jos Schnurer) …
