With the compendium Caught in Society, psychologist Dileta Fernandes Sequeira presents one of the few works that deals with the psychological consequences of everyday racist violence in Germany. Fernandes Sequeira’s volume is aimed primarily at psychologists and therapists and explores the entanglement of all members of society in a racist system. Numerous examples are used to show what the traumatizing consequences of racial violence mean for the field of psychology. The author develops approaches to solutions that aim equally at empowering those affected and at raising the awareness of society as a whole. “People who experience racism experience it through…

The KiDs edition Children’s Songs for All from the Institute for the Situational Approach (ISTA) offers suggestions for discrimination-sensitive practice in dealing with children’s songs. In the description of the publication, the authors point out the great potential and real dangers contained in children’s songs. “Children’s songs have it all: they promote musicality and language development, they can be persistent catchy tunes, they are fun and strengthen the group feeling. And they contain messages about the world and about what is considered “normal” – or not. In this capacity, they can help broaden or narrow horizons, teach correct or incorrect…
The Institute for the Situational Approach (ISTA) has published a brochure in its series “KiDs” that contains suggestions for a discrimination-sensitive approach to carnival celebrations. Many children love to dress up, and the carnival, with its costumes, special room decorations, candy, and chips, is a popular highlight in the daycare and elementary school everyday life. But what if the fun of one child contains hurtful messages about the other person’s family? What if costumes echo and repeat discriminatory attributions about gender, family cultures, or acts of exoticization and racialization? See the description of the brochure of ISTA The handout makes…

The book “Girl or Boy” is one of the few books for children that critically examines gender roles and the construction of gender. The easy-to-understand texts are thought-provoking and challenge the pervasive expectations that girls prefer to play with Barbies and boys want to play soccer. (Cf. book description). The nonfiction picture book, which also depicts Figures of Color, is recommended for children ages three to six. It also contains an explanatory epilogue for reference persons reading aloud, which also refers to selected theory texts. The book is highly recommended thematically. It must be critically noted, however, that transidentity is…

“It’s not the differences that inhibit us, it’s the silence.” Through her poems, lyrics, and speeches, Audre Lorde (1934-1992) sought to transform silence about racism_sexism_classism into political activism. She became, and still is, one of the main inspirations for anti-racist women’s lesbian movements. In the German context, her activist and academic engagement in the 1980s contributed centrally to debates around racism_anti-Semitism within feminist contexts and empowered Black feminist voices and community building. Even today her thinking continues to have an effect and help her W_orte to: confidence, strength & resistance.
