At the center of the anthology is the concept of justice, which has been repeatedly discussed as a Euro- and Androcentric design within the last decades. In the book, queer, feminist, critical of racism contributions are bundled, which deal with legal norms of justice and their effects. From a postcolonial perspective, the authors explore the question of whether the current understanding of justice actually expands the agency of marginalized groups. The possibility that existing power relations between those who “do justice” and those who “receive justice” are instead stabilized is discussed at length in the book. (See also the publisher’s…

What does feminism mean today? This question is at the heart of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s powerful essay “We Should All Be Feminists,” which grew out of her 2013 TED talk of the same name. Clever and humorous, Adichie offers a unique definition of feminism as it is needed in the 21st century; a feminism grounded in inclusion and awareness: “She shines a light not only on blatant discrimination, but also the more insidious, institutional behaviors that marginalise women around the world, in order to help readers of all walks of life better understand the often masked realities of sexual politics.…
Texts and collages that have appeared on the blog migrantenstadl, as well as previously unpublished material, are now presented by the authors in book form. “You are the voice from the middle of the periphery! The migrantenstadl is the initiative of Tunay Önder and Imad Mustafa. They view and interpret social processes – as members of the academic lumpenproletariat and themselves offspring of working guests – from an alternative perspective, with an alternative background of experience. […] Provocative headlines, honest reflections, political poetry and Dada: migrantenstadl mixes politics, culture and migration; it offers a forum to those who otherwise have…
In the book, Yasemin Shooman looks at print publications, newspaper articles, websites, and letters to Muslim associations to examine current anti-Muslim narratives and their functions. She focuses on self-images and images of others, but also on historical contexts, and finally highlights dominant linguistic images and motifs. Her analysis work in the relatively new field of research shows that there is a racialization of religious affiliation that leads into anti-Muslim racism. This is based on a confluence of categories such as religion, class, constructed race, and gender. (See the publisher’s description of the book) Yasemin Shooman 2014: “…because their culture is…

Zami – is the biography of Black feminist author and activist Audre Lorde. The work was first published in the USA in the 1980s under the title “Zami – A New Spelling of My Name”. Since 2012, the “mythobiography” has also been available in German. “In ZAMI, the African American poet creates a new form, mythobiography, a linking of elements of autobiography, mythology, and history – and in this way creates new approaches to the discovery of female identity.” […] Despite the tensions of social origin, Lorde experiences black and lesbian not as polar dualities but as overlapping entities. In the volume edited by Zülfukar Çetin and Savaş Taş, people experienced with racism speak from multiple perspectives about forms of racism and entanglements with other relations of domination. Activists, academics and artists provide insights into current discussions in the form of interviews and highlight resistant practices and perspectives. The book features a majority of Women of Color. Queer and feminist perspectives as well as experiences and expertise of refugee women are co-represented in the volume. We would like to draw special attention to the interviews with Isidora Randjelović and Elsa Fernandez. The authors deal with the current forms and…
Diaspora Reflexionen is the blog of a Muslim woman of color in Germany. In her entries, she discusses, among other things, experiences of racism and the difficulty of addressing them within the culture of dominance. Regular foci of the blog are media representations of minorities, language, body and identity. Recent texts deal with dynamics and conflicts that arise within political communities and familial contexts against a backdrop of marginalization and resistance. They name clues and ways around how they can lead into a viable emancipatory practice.
